Teenage and Juvenile Crime: Minor in Possession

Unsurprisingly, one of the leading Teenage and Juvenile Crime involves alcohol.  Although illegal at the time, teenage drinking for those of us who grew up in the 1980s was hardly the big deal it is in today's criminal justice system. "Back in the day", police officers exercised discretion and either poured it out, or (I assume) took it back to the station for after the shift.  If you were really unlucky in the 80s, the police took you home and you had to face your parents.

Mobsters, Gangs, Motorcycle Clubs, and Violent Crime

Organized crime, and the violent crime associated with it, no longer follows the stereotypes of suit and tie Mafioso's or inner-city thugs. Motorcycle gangs are now becoming primary targets of federal investigations. Last week, federal investigators indicted 41 members of the Devil's Diciples Motorcycle Club. 31 of the members were arrested here in Michigan and in Alabama. The federal charges ranged from racketeering, drug trafficking, gun possession, obstruction of justice, and illegal gambling. Federal prosecutors have indicted 18 of these members under the Racketeer Influenced and Corrupt Organizations (RICO) Act for allegedly conducting an illegal enterprise that included attempted murder, drug trafficking, robbery, and more. During the crack down, police seized over 60 guns, 6,000 rounds of ammunition, and shut down eight methamphetamine labs.

A Good Day For The Justice System: "Attempted Murder" Results in Misdemeanor

Monroe, MI - Today was a good day for The Justice System.  The Law Office of John Freeman, PLLC is pleased to announce the successful conclusion of a client's case today in Monroe County District Court.  Originally charged by the Monroe County Michigan Sheriff's Department with Attempted Murder for allegedly firing a gun at her physically abusive husband's head, Mr. Freeman's client was sentenced today following a no contest plea earlier this summer.

New Evidence in Oakland County Child Killer Case

In Oakland County, one of the most notorious alleged crime sprees is one that remains unsolved. Between 1976 and 1977, four children, two boys and two girls, were found murdered on Woodward Avenue between Ferndale and Birmingham. The media referred to the murderer as the Oakland County Child Killer. A recent breakthrough has brought the case back in the spotlight. FBI investigators have linked evidence, specifically hairs found the backseat of Arch Edward Sloan's vehicle with hairs found on two of the four victims. A Mitochondrial DNA test was used to match hairs.  This is the first breakthrough that links at least two of the children's murders to each other.

The Justice System: Debt Means Jail Time

Financial debt to the justice system not only impacts your credit, but now it can lead to jail time. Michigan cities and towns are now turning to what is commonly known as user fees. These fees, unlike fines that are meant to punish, are intended to raise revenue for cities and towns. The problem arises when individuals who are responsible for a simple traffic offense cannot pay and are burdened with late fees, interest, and other charges that result in suspended licenses and damaged credit. Now, not only does the individual need to come up with more money, but they have lost their ability to drive their vehicle to a job or find housing due to bad credit.

White-Collar Crime on Wall Street meets Main Street

For years, Wall Street and Main Street have kept their distance from one another. Financial corruption typically involved bank-on-bank offenses. Not anymore. With more and more allegations of corruption coming to light recently, the two have become much more intertwined than most originally thought
